Day 1 - Punta Gorda to White Springs FL

Nancy and I pushed off at roughly 12:30 this afternoon.  Our plan was to go roughly 270 miles from Punta Gorda to White Springs FL, near the Georgia border.  After over 2 hours we were still short of Tampa.  Some torrential rains where I had to put the flashers on and really slow down.  Accidents all over.  Trucks rolled over.  Cars T-Boned.  Some crazy s—t on the road.

Driving my new to me Ram 1500 Hemi pickup with a 5,000 lb trailer hooked up to the back.  The truck feels squirrelly on the road.  Trying to keep it at 60 mph, sometimes I hit 65.  18 wheelers passing on my left, the whole rig moving as they went past.  We were trying to see how many license plates we could identify from different states.  It was really hard.  At first we thought our eyesight was deteriorating, but later we realized that cars where wizzing past us so fast that we couldn’t read the names.

I asked her about BBQ and she recommended place in town “Fat Belly’s” the only restaurant in White Springs).  We took some back to the RV.  Not earth shattering, but a really cute town and place.

An easy drive today going north on 75 until we reached Macon.  Then we turned off onto the country roads.  Clear skies and modest traffic. Just before we made the final approach we stopped for some ice.  As we were pulling out, I noticed there was a guy selling boiled peanuts.  I’ve heard of them and I’m sure it’s a Georgia delicacy.  Nancy hopped out and ordered some while I stayed in the truck.  She told me they chatted about how to eat them.  He said he liked ‘em cold.  Nancy suggested with a beer and they laughed in agreement.  I thought it would be good to try ‘em hot, so she opened the container and I popped one into my mouth.  I realized immediately that maybe  that wasn’t the best idea.  I plan to try them later with a beer and without the shell on!!!

Day 28 Wild Ride from Myrtle Beach SC to Jekyll Island Ga

 It started routinely enough.  A late start at roughly 10:30 but we were in no hurry.  About 1/2 an hour into the drive in Conway GA, we hit a bump in the road.   Nothing out of the ordinary.  Doing around 45 MPH in the RH lane.  The trailer made a crashing sound and was weaving around in the rear view mirror. Immediately off the gas and it get worse.  Nancy is yelling for me to stop.  I slow the rig down to a stop and pull off, but there was really no shoulder.  I get my breath and get out to look.  The rig had jumped off of the ball.  The lock was still locked and the front of the trailer was dragging on the post that holds it up.  The chains were the only thing holding the trailer to the truck. Nothing appeared broken.  The tire had air, the ball came out of the lock from the bump.  A small truck pulled up behind.  A city of Conway employee in a city vehicle. Day 22 and 23 - Kill Devil Hills to Ocracoke

 It’s a long 80 miles to the tip of Hatteras from Kill Devil Hills.  Traffic is very slow in spots and it took nearly 2 hours with a stop for gas and ice.  We got to the ferry at noon and were told we had a 2 hour wait which was accurate.  The ride to Ocracoke took about an hour as the ferry had to take a long way around the shoals.   See picture of track below.  The track line is black. At Teeters campground, we set up and cruised around to familiarize ourselves with the area and look for a place for dinner.  We went to Ocracoke Oyster Company and had a nice dinner on their screened porch.  On Friday, we Rented bikes and took a long ride to the Ocracoke Ponies which were shipwrecked here in the 1700’s.  Later, Nancy went to the beach and I took another short ride.  Later we went to the lighthouse which is the 2nd oldest operating lighthouse in the US.  We stopped at the fish market and picked up some fabulous tuna and shrimp which...
